Hina Matsuri Dolls And Display

Justine joint the Polymer Clay Workshop on March 2007, she is now a young artist full of passion and take pride in creating all her clay projects.

After 40 clay lessons, almost a year, she finally completed her Hina Dolls And Display. At Play Creation, the Art Teachers, provides easy direction and technique in clay art, the students will learn the right method and enhance their skill quickly. Equally important, is the experienced clay student will share their skills with the other students, within the workshop, teaching and learning from each other within the same class.

As teacher, we must encourage all the student to excel, appreciating and prasing them in their every efforts, during the learning stages of creating any of their Arts.

This is the only way to enhance their live skill to boost their self-esteem and confidence.

Garie ... your tiny Snowman in the glass tube is wonderful! What a great gift! I didn't even know you could find little tiny glass tubes like that ... is there somewhere that we can order them? Not that I would ever be able to do those tiny treasures like you do but I'm sure they could be filled with glitter or beads or whatever. I think I could even probably manage to make some tiny candy canes or something if I really worked at it, lol!

I remember the very first time I ever heard about you (many years ago) and you had made the smallest, itty-bitty teddy bear ever done with clay and it was adorable. I couldn't believe how tiny it was and, here you are now, still making delightful tiny things. I'm glad some things never change!

Also, I want to thank you for sharing the pictures of your "kids" and their projects. I've been a bit under the weather and have gotten way behind on COC posts so I'm very late with replies.

I was very impressed with the little stalls/vegetable stands, sea globes, mini foods and scenes that the kids had made. Samantha's miniature play room is so imaginative and creative and the more I looked at it the more I kept finding more things I'd missed. That young lady is very, very talented! I don't know why I am always so surprised because they always come up with well made and wonderful projects. And, as always, I love the smiling faces proudly showing their accomplishments!

"Existing art-based or cultural education programmes carried out by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and its respective institutions are often superficial."

IT IS heartening to understand that the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) - through the Arts and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR) steering committee - has taken tangible steps to increase the status and prominence of the arts in Singapore and to heighten excellence in artists, musicians, professionals, et cetera.

The report "'Larger role' for the arts in Singapore" (Feb 12-13) reflects the chief challenges - identified by the committee - that plague Singapore's cultural and arts scenes. That is, the lack of sustainable appreciation of the arts, the need for empowerment of industry workers and correspondingly increasing their skills or productivity, as well as to synergise public and private sector efforts to support the industry collectively.

Even though these concerns are valid, the focus should be premised upon the implementation of assorted recommendations to gradually address the ment*loned objectives.

Minister Lui Tuck Yew's assertion - in his brief response to the Interim report that Singaporeans have to broaden their definitions of the arts and culture is certainly not a tangible solution for the dearth of arts appreciation.

Furthermore, continuously expecting art groups and performers to speedily scale peaks of excellence will not yield results if there is a significant absence of financial, resourcebased and manpower support rendered.

The true panacea lies in the active engagement of the arts from a young age.

Existing art-based initiatives or cultural education programmes carried -out by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and its respective institutions are often superficial; with educators and students merely going through the motion.

As a student, the general perception towards the arts was one characterised by apathy and lethargy; with many of my counterparts dismissing the arts and culture - in the form of musicals, concerts, instrumental performances, dramas - as being high brow and highfalutin.

There are a few reasons for these perspectives. First, many of our parents were
not interested or exposed to these elements; hence, art appreciation was not part of our childhood years.

Next, sessions dedicated to arts appreciation were either monotonous or unproductive, with many in the form of pedantic lectures and PowerPoint slides that put individuals into sleep.

Finally, institutions have very laissezfaire attitudes toward s the arts and do not adequately engage community partners to promote such cultures.

Art education methodologies must start to involve parents and working professionals to a larger degree; so as to allow them to comprehend the general elements of performances and artistic presentations.

They are in prime positions to influence their children to be more cognisant and sensitive to these artistic and cultural aspects.

Schools can also develop partnerships with local theatres, art-based non-government organisations (NGOS) and community associations to gradually broaden the horizons of their students and teachers.

Most importantly, the MOE must work closely with the MICA to review existing programmes; so as to weed out anti-quated teaching pedagogies and, subsequently, get students more involved and passionate in the arts. Even though the impetus ultimately lies with the students themselves, the administration can do its part to facilitate these experiences and, hopefully, inculcate interest one step at a time.

Hello Linda, This is one way of keeping the tradition and custom alive, I felt
that the spirit of celebrating CNY is no longer the same.
In my childhood years, Chinese New Year were such a Joyful and Happy occasion
and would like it to last forever.
I see lots of parent are now stressed out over work and having to make a living
for the family with high inflation in our country.
To them any holidays are resting and relaxing time, before going back to the
same routine.
Hopefully, by teaching them a skill, celebrating the Chinese New Year with the
kids and also giving away oranges with the lucky Ang Pow (

I wonder where that started, when possession of one was obviously so very

the bringer of luck. As far as I know it has to be killed/harvested/whatever you
want to call it under certain circumstances.

Your kids are always so delightful, Garie! I am always impressed with their work
but they win me over with their big smiles and those eyes that sparkle with
happiness at what they have accomplished. They look so proud.

When I see them holding their wonderful creations I think .."These kids are just
too young to make these amazing things" and then I remember that they have a
really awesome teacher!

I really got a great chuckle out of the little man with the shirt that has "Lock
up your daughters" written on it. He's a little charmer!

Happy kids for happy chinese new year, always fun and rewarding doing clay
projects for the festival occasion, even the hardcore kids, "I only make
dinosaur and monster" will also do the rabbit to celebrate CNY :-D
To me all kids are creative, some are slow, others are fast, for the slow
learner, I will taught them the simple approached, by creating 2D clay to look
like 3D on the display.
Kids are kids, brother irritates sister, quarreling among brother over toys or
what they like to made, ultimately, " I will compliant to mummy " ;-(
At our workshop, we have many wonderful /generous parents with good sense of
humor that will make you chuckle.

I was so impressed with the little reindeer as I am partial to reindeer and have a collection of all different kinds. They are really so cute are very well made.
The young lady that made the Nativity did an amazing job - it is so lovely and well done. Awesome job!

Where do all these awesome kids get all these great ideas? I know that you are a great teacher when I see all the creative things they make but they all seem to have their own creative style too.
The tiny table with the breakfast is so sweet - the cups, dishes, food, coffee pot, utensils and even the table cloth with trim is a mini work of art.
The little figure with the leaf wings has such a cute expression on her face and it just make me smile.
The young lady that made those great phone charms looks very happy with her work and she should be - they are a very clever and cute idea.
I love that little puppy in the tub and the way she made the bubbles... it's adorable!
The little lady that made the tiny bears with the fish has done an awesome job putting everything together so well and her work is really good.
The young fella with the cowboy scene has also done some really good work. There's a lot of detail in his work and I love how pleased he looks with his project.
The volcano is cool! The young man that made it sure has a very good imagination and I like the way he did the "smoke" coming out at the top.
The young man that made the swimming pool and house has done a really big project and it looks wonderful. He should be very proud of making someting so nice.
I love the robots the kids made too! Both of them did really great jobs on their projects and sure did a lot better than I could ever do.
The young lady that made all the miniature animals really made me smile! They are all so very cute and I especially like the penquins. Really nice work.

My website have been running for 12 years, I have not re-organize the site,
since the last 8 years. My initial attempt causes major problem to some of
the links and graphic. I was nervous and decided to change all the existing

Tina, After years of teaching Play Clay, I noticed that there are
more girls loves to hands-on with polymer clay. They are very
focus on every of their clay projects. As for the boys, some of
them really cannot keep still and I told them that I will apply
Superglue on their seat to stick them down. It took me quite
awhile to help them concentrate in their clay sessions. Once,
they are able to seat for 45 minutes and playing with the clay,
extending another half an hour will not be a problem.

Hi PeggyH, It took me a few weeks and I'm still updating the site,
I always like a darker background as the images will show up better
in contrast with the lettering, as for my shopping page, it took me
sometime to select the background, just like choosing wallpaper for
your home, at times, I've to create my own background through Photoshop.
Its quite an experience after when you put up all together.

Garie! you must know I am so grateful to you for having those wonderful
Ideas!

A friend of mine asked me to hold a clay birthday party for kids 7 years
old. We all, kids, parents and me "Teacher" (LOL) had such fun. The kids
were amazing. They were ignited by my enthusiasm and fun and we hed a
terrific time. you could see trhe kids were having a lot of fun.
I brought wth me all kind of "equipment" gadgets like cookies cutters
and garlic mincers gadgets that makes "clay hair" and that sorts and
demostrated how to stick cane slices to a baked clay covered egg.
I just had such good vibes from the kids, they were loveable!
girls made little corsages of flowers and one girl made a farm scene
with bunches of fresh cut wheat and cows grazsing around.
a boys made a Helicopter landed in the midst of a bush and he just fell
in love with the garlic mince machine making a huge patch of greenery.
some of the kids wanted to have samples before theri eyes and here are

When I wrote that, I had absolutely NO idea you were on this list!!
LOL! It took a while for it to sink in, actually. Soon after that,
the computer broke (cooincidence?? lol) Seriously - It's an absolute

clay lists, including one I started myself, and this one is definetly
unique! Like alot of other artists, I'm also self-taught... me, having
a love for clay since before I could even write my name. There were no
workshops for kids back then, just simple art class. Which I will

to make our holidays brighter! The Santa, sled, reindeer and little
cottage are adorable! I really got a kick out of the "additional" sled
too. The photos of the two kids with those smiling faces showing their
projects are priceless ... the looks on their faces says it all!

The card with the scene made with the clay things is so perfect and it
made me wonder why I don't do things like that with my clay stuff. What
an awesome idea to make cards like that and not just for Christmas but
for any occasion.

Sending a big thank you to you and your wonderful kids ... not only for
the card and wishes but for ALL the inspiration they give us throughout
the whole year. Love and big hugs to you and your family and those
talented, creative and great kids of yours!

Hi, I've completed the tutorial, Happy Swinging Monkey.

Actually, I have completed four of tutorials on photograph,but was not happy with the others.

Garie what cool pic. The little boy with the spiderman is just

Again I love to see the kids (and adults) and their creativity they are
so wonderful and talented. My batman or superman car would never look
that good!
What I also love to see is their smiling faces showing off their
creations. They look so proud of themselves and that is a great thing

This is a unique polymer clay project book for children, fun and easy to follow with step-by-step pictorial instructions and illustrations. The book contents composed of 90% pictures and illustrations, makes it easier for children to follow the clay projects.The original creative clay projects will help children to improve their motor skills, visual observation, hand-eye co-ordination, enhancing their creative learning skills. This book is suitable for children aged 5 and above and will help them creating school projects.
" Got Clay Can Play " features 12 local children of different ages, races, personalities and talents, but all with a love for fun with polymer clay. These are original favourite projects that were created using polymer clay combined with some recycled everyday objects around us. The 12 original clay projects can be varied with many other design. For example, you can change the " Bunny Pencil Holder " into a " Doggy Pencil Holder "

P.S. I used to be a Director of a Day Care Center and often tried to
get the children here in Mid US to do the same. Some of the 10-11 year
olds got very involved, but the younger ones wouldn't even try. In
general, many of our US students are so used to being entertained they
no longer seem to know HOW to use their imaginations. It is very sad.
